No heat, and nothing is running
Before anything else, rule out the three causes that are not repairs: the thermostat, the service switch and, on oil, the tank. If those check out, the fault is inside the equipment and a technician needs to see it.
The line takes calls around the clock, every day of the year.
Three checks that take five minutes
Thermostat. The display is lit, it is set to heat, and the setting is a few degrees above the room. Battery thermostats go blank when the batteries die and then send no call for heat.
Service switch. A furnace or boiler has an on/off switch nearby, often a light switch with a red cover at the top of the basement stairs. It gets flipped by mistake more often than anyone admits.
Fuel. On oil, read the gauge on top of the tank. On gas, check whether other gas appliances work. On a heat pump, check the breakers for both the outdoor unit and the air handler.
If all three are fine
Gas furnace. Look through the little window in the panel. A blinking light with a pattern is a fault code; count the flashes. A furnace that has tried and failed to light several times will lock itself out for a while.
Oil burner. If the red reset button on the burner control has popped up, press it once. If the burner does not stay lit, stop and call. See the oil burner locked out.
Boiler. Note the pressure on the gauge. Very low pressure can keep a hot-water boiler from firing.
How fast the house cools
NOAA normals at Philadelphia International Airport put about 77 nights a year at or below 32°F, with the coldest stretch in January. Half of Gibbstown's homes were built by 1962, and an older house without its heat loses temperature quickly on those nights. If pipes run along outside walls, open the cabinet doors under sinks while you wait.
Do not heat the house with an oven or an outdoor heater. If a carbon monoxide alarm sounds, get everyone outside and call 911.
What to say when you call
- No heat at all, right now
- Gas, oil, propane or electric; furnace, boiler or heat pump
- What you checked, and what the board light or reset button showed
- Thermostat setting and indoor temperature
- Address and ZIP code
Have the fuel, the age and the thermostat reading ready. Then call and ask who is taking work in your ZIP code.
