The AC is running but the air is warm
Warm air from a running air conditioner means the outdoor unit is not removing heat. The cause is usually a failed capacitor, a refrigerant leak, a dirty outdoor coil, or an indoor airflow problem, and the outdoor unit is where the answer starts.
The line takes calls around the clock, every day of the year.
Go outside and listen
Fan spinning, unit humming, air warm. Refrigerant may be low, or the compressor is not pumping.
Unit silent. Check the outdoor disconnect and the breaker. If both are on, a failed capacitor or contactor is likely.
Fan not turning, but a hum. Often a capacitor. Do not poke the fan to start it.
Quick checks inside
- Set the thermostat to cool and a few degrees below the room.
- Check the filter. A clogged filter cuts airflow and can freeze the coil.
- Look at the copper line near the outdoor unit. Ice on it is a separate clue. See ice on the AC lines.
What a technician measures
Refrigerant pressures with gauges, the temperature difference between return air and supply air, the capacitor reading, and the condition of both coils. Those numbers separate a part replacement from a leak search.
The age question
A system installed between about 2010 and 2025 most likely runs on R-410A. It can still be repaired and recharged. A leak on an older system, though, opens the AC replacement question, because a new outdoor unit now uses a different refrigerant and needs a matching coil.
What to say when you call
- Central air or heat pump, and roughly how old
- Whether the outdoor unit is running, humming or silent
- Thermostat setting and indoor temperature
- Address and ZIP code
Have the fuel, the age and the thermostat reading ready. Then call and ask who is taking work in your ZIP code.
