There is ice on the AC lines or the indoor coil

An air conditioner that freezes in July is short of either airflow or refrigerant. Switch the cooling off and run the fan alone to melt the ice, then call. Running it frozen can damage the compressor.

The line takes calls around the clock, every day of the year.

Why it freezes

The indoor coil runs cold by design. If too little warm air crosses it, or too little refrigerant flows through it, the coil drops below freezing and the moisture it pulls from the air turns to ice. The ice blocks more air, and the problem feeds itself.

Airflow causes. A clogged filter, closed registers, a weak furnace blower, or a dirty coil.

Refrigerant causes. A leak that has left the system undercharged.

What to do now

  1. Set the thermostat to off, and the fan to on.
  2. Put towels around the furnace. Melting ice can overflow the drain pan.
  3. Replace the filter if it is dirty.
  4. Leave the cooling off until a technician has checked it.

Melting can take several hours.

What a technician checks

Airflow first: the filter, the blower speed, the coil surface. Then refrigerant pressures and superheat. If there is a leak, the technician finds it before adding refrigerant; adding refrigerant without a leak search only delays the next freeze.

Heat pumps in winter

In winter, frost on a heat pump's outdoor coil is normal and clears in defrost cycles. A thick block of ice that keeps growing is not. See heat pump repair.

What to say when you call

  • Where the ice is: the line outside, the coil, or both
  • How long the system ran before you noticed
  • When the filter was last changed
  • Address and ZIP code

Have the fuel, the age and the thermostat reading ready. Then call and ask who is taking work in your ZIP code.
